My roommate (K), earlier, sipping whisky said: “I want soup.”
A couple hours later, we have 4 things of soup and 4 chips. I (M) am here to review some chips.
Lowcountry Kettle Mustard BBQ sauce. It’s made in Charleston, SC, but we’ll give it the benefit of the doubt. Thick cut skin on taters with BBQ, which apparently the lowcountry is known for. K smells. Hands me the bag. Just smells like BBQ. Skin is attached. Crunchy. Mustardy. It actually is basically a mustard based BBQ sauce chip. Kettle cooked so they have that crisp oily-ness to it. Tastes like it says. Thick, crunchy, a good chip. A full sized bag may be too much for the flavor but we got a 2 oz bag, so as a lunch item, may be good. Eat your sandwich WITH the chips, not one than the other.
K: “They are okay. I’ll give them kudos for tasting like they say. And if you like a nice hard, kettle cooked chip, these are good. 3/5.”
M: “I like the crunch, but it’s nothing memorable really. 2/5”
Lowcountry Kettle State Fair Fried Pickle. Just one pickle in the bag. K looks into the bag “Wow. They used plenty of dill.” Shows me. “Yes. Yes, they did.” Smells not like pickle, more of a Japanese Kombucha (not the thing you get in the states), K says. And I agree. “Like between green tea and something tart.”
M: “Wow. I am not sure I like that.”
I’m not sure what it tastes like.
K: “It tastes like an old fashioned pickle.” Takes another. “That is.. … …I mean if I were dying for chips, I’d eat it. I guess it does taste like fried pickles, and I do love fried pickles, just not in chip form. And I dip them in ranch…I wonder if I dip it in ranch? The more I taste, these do taste like fried pickles, because friend pickles don’t taste like pickels. This guys may be good to crush up and use as a coating on something. I’m just not sure I like it as a chip.”
K: “It tastes like a fried pickles, minus all the things that I like of a fried pickle. 2/5.”
M: “I just did not particularly like that, and I have a low tolerance for oily foods, so this chip is not worth it to me. At best 1/5”
Krakatoa Mustard’s Revenge. Description (from the bag): Burn Timing: medium build, long finish. Burn intensity: 3/5 flames, 9,490 Scoville unit per chip. Burn location: Tip of tongue, into nose. Peppers featured: Cayenne and Red Chili peppers.
We both appreciate that they seem to at least having a baseline and standard for what they mean by spicy.
K opens the bag. Smells. “Know what it smells like – buffalo wings.” Definitely vinegary.
It does taste like it has peppers in it. Has heat. This is definitely about as spicy as the other spicy chips we’ve gotten.
K: “I can feel as the burn has settled. There’s heat there so you don’t need to eat a lot to feel it. Flavor wise, it’s not honey mustard, but there’s a bit of sweetness to it. Especially if drunk, I could eat the whole bag. 3.5/5.”
M: “Good flavor. I like it. K mentioned how she thinks that the spice’ll build until it’s at its limit and then basically stop, I agree. It’ll get you to a spice level, and then pretty much stay. 3/5.”
Krakatoa Black Magic. Description (from the bag): Burn Timing: Intensifying build, long burn. Burn Intensity: 5/5 flames, 38,700 Scoville units per chip. Burn Location: Tongue, throat, lips and eyes. Peppers Featured: Ghost Pepper, Habanero, Cayenne, and Chipotle.
K smells and “I don’t smell much other than the grease of potato chips, but the back of my throat did start to burn a little bit.”
M: “I can smell the smokey-ness of maybe not just the chipotle. This actually reminds me of my rabbit’s hay. Take that as you will.”
K bites into it, chokes a bit. Tip of tongue burning, but not the middle.
M it’s pretty good. I can feel the burn a bit, nothing bad.
K spreads low and smooth because now it’s down her throat.
Chip 2.
K: “I think you messed me up, M, because I’ve eaten too many things that you’ve cooked that had stabbing pain, and I’m waiting for that.”
M: Still pretty good flavor. A bit more heat. Mostly in the mouth for me.
Chip 3, 4.
K: “Not bad and a respectable amount of burning for a potato chip. I have to not breathe in while chewing because, for some reason, it tickles something in the back throat. May be spicy enough that I couldn’t just eat the entire bag.”
Chip 5-8.
M: “Still not bad. Mostly mouth burn for me. Not that bad, really.”
After a few more chips:
K: “Not the spiciest I’ve ever eaten, but I live with a masochist (M), although maybe I should say sadist (M). But, it is probably the spiciest potato chip I’ve ever eaten. But not oh god spicy. I should say that I appreciate that usually when you have chips you have that spice in one area, but this was like eating spicy food and was spicy all over the mouth. Not bad as a chip, good flavor. 4/5. I respect that they got that much of a spicy peppers cooking with other stuff experience in it…I kinda need to blow my nose.“ *gets up to blow nose*
M: “Definitely not the spiciest thing I’ve ever eaten, but spicy for a chip. Good flavor, assuming you like peppers, which I do. I like it. 4/5.”
Later, we had a few more of the Mustard's Revenge, and it was a good thing we did it in this order. After Black Magic, Mustard's Revenge isn't even a bit
